trondheim was shut!

so an early start because we had to see trondheim by 11.30am as the boat was leaving at midday! i was sworn to secrecy about lou's birthday as he didn't want any kind of fuss. nothing new there then! :) we did the usual thing of swathing ourselves in layers of clothing, donning boots, hats and gloves before facing the outdoors. we've dubbed ourselves mr and mrs michelin man! the sunshine of the day before had gone and we had low cloud cover but no rain. the walk into the town centre was a bit of a trudge but a good idea given how much food we are eating. being a sunday the place was empty except for little knots of tourists (there were two hurtigruten boats in town. gavin who spent a month in the city a few years back had said to head for the cathedral so we did. on the way we walked alongside a pretty river with the now ubiquitous coloured wooden warehouses lining both banks. lots of photos and then we found the cathedral. an immense gothic and gloomy building that put me in mind of a dirty westminster cathedral. i went in just as choir practise was coming to an end. with the singing stopped i decided it was too dark to stay inside and went back out into the almost as gloomy weather. the cathedral visitors centre was open and full of lovely scandinavian objet d'art. i restrained myself and bought cards to write for the special crossing the arctic circle stamps and franking plus one tiny cheeky pottery christmas angel! a meander (we do a lot of this!) back down through the middle of town and past olav on his extremely tall column as if trying to put london's nelson to shame. back on board we had lunch and then lou 'rested his eyelids' while i tackled the washing in the bowels of the ship! about to use the tumble dryer i spotted that all of lou's quick dry tops (sic) can't be put into one! so our cabin took on the aspect of a laundry for the rest of the day as we hung things from every available bit of usable space. back to 'our' table in the cafe/bar to use the wifi and watch the scenery again until it was time for dinner. it's a hard life! there was a glorious sunset as the cloud lifted. the lovely couple who share our table were on form and we ended up in the top deck panorama lounge watching for the lights and the amazing docking skills of our captain....or his computer, when he 'parked' behind a sister ship at rorvik.
