bergen enfin!

i am so glad the hotel wouldn't let me cancel! the girl on the desk asked if i was the one who tried. i owned up that, yes, twas i, but only because i read after booking that there was a noisy bar. 'no problem' she said 'i'll give you a room at the back' and she did! we're on the 5th floor and only heard one cheer when we think someone scored. (it is a football bar out on the street in front with a big flat screen, heaters and covered with plastic so fans can sit and smoke and cheer!). the room is small but there is a proper bathroom with a lovely heated floor. i've decided the bad reviews on trip advisor must be written by a joyless set of travellers! our day started with a splendid breakfast. lots of choice and i succumbed to a plate of bacon and hash browns to fortify myself for the day. i did counter it by having a big bowl of fresh fruit salad! :) a dawdle to the station (well i dawdled, lou did his usual headlong rush!) where we bought filled baguettes (upper crust is everywhere!), fruit and papers for the ride. lots of skiers and families getting on the train so i wonder if it is school holiday time here. the scenery became more and more stunning and the sun shone so brightly the woman behind us pulled down the communal blind . happily i could still see through it. the highest point of the journey was the plateau in the hardangervidda national park. 'eerie' rough guide calls it and it was. little houses scattered here and there with no obvious signs of how to access them. then at fense station it all became clear when i saw a row of skiddoos lined up! the sun set majestically behind the rounded peaks and then we ran down into the valley near voss and found we had gone from 1110 metres above sea level (our translation of m.o.h.) to 52m! at bergen it felt a lot warmer than oslo had in the morning. as gav says, i told lou, it is always warmer his side of the downs, maybe that works for bergen too! a short walk to find this hotel and settle in. the wonderful girl on the desk also recommended a nearby restaurant for soup and salad which we fancied. what soup and what salad! each of us had a huge bowl, lou's filled with seafood salad and mine with a spicy thai soup and lots of seafood and veg. i could taste every veg even the courgette which some feat for the chef!. it befitted a day which was the 47th anniversary of when we met at the garrick theatre all those years ago! :)
